Covered California

Affordable Health Insurance for Students

Covered California is the name of California's Health Insurance Marketplace with coverage beginning on January 1, 2014. Covered California makes it simple and affordable for students to purchase high-quality health insurance and access financial assistance to pay for the coverage. You can shop online, on the phone or in person to find the health insurance option best for you.

You might not think it will happen to you, but it could: a bad crash while mountain biking or an emergency appendectomy. Whatever it may be, if you don’t have health insurance, how will you pay for it? You could end up paying the full cost of an emergency room visit, which can cost thousands.

Covered California is your destination for health coverage that doesn’t skimp on benefits. Covered California is part of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” helping you get the following:

  • Financial assistance to pay for health insurance
  • Free preventative care, including routine examinations, immunizations, birth control, etc
  • Low premiums and co-pays, even with a pre-existing condition

You can now enroll in a health plan that best suits your needs, whether online, by phone or through your local Certified Enrollment Counselor. For many, health insurance through Covered California will be available at no cost. If you are single, not claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return, and make $15,856 or less a year, you may qualify for no-cost coverage. If you are married or have a child, you can earn more and still qualify for no cost insurance.

Legal residents of California without access to affordable health insurance through their employer or another government program will be eligible to purchase health coverage through Covered California (California Health Insurance Exchange).
