Probation and Dismissal

Find out how to be removed from the two types of probation, Academic Probation and Progress Probation.

Academic Probation
If you took at least 12 units at Sierra College and earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of less than 2.0 in all units attempted, you will be on Academic Probation.
Progress Probation
If you enrolled in at least 12 units at Sierra College and got W, I, or NP in 50% or more of the total units attempted, you will be on Progress Probation.

Either type of probation means you cannot register for more than 13 units until probation ends. You may have to follow a student educational plan (SEP) that you develop with a counselor.

Removal from Probation

Academic Probation

Academic Probation will end when your cumulative Sierra College GPA is 2.0 or higher.

Progress Probation

Progress Probation will end when your percentage of W, I, and NP units at Sierra College drops below 50%.

Dismissal

Academic Probation

If you are on Academic Probation, you will be dismissed if your cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 in all units attempted in each of two consecutive semesters* (excluding summer).

Progress Probation

If you are on Progress Probation, you will be dismissed if the percentage of W, I, and NP units in at least two consecutive semesters* reaches or exceeds 50% (excluding summer).

* Semesters are considered consecutive based on your enrollment. For example, fall semester followed by another fall semester is consecutive if you were not enrolled in the spring semester.

What Happens When You are Dismissed

When you are notified of your dismissal, you will not be able to enroll in any classes for one semester. You may request readmission after one semester. Contact a counselor for further information.

Automatic Dismissal Appeal

If you make satisfactory term progress by achieving a 2.0 GPA, you will get an automatic dismissal appeal for the next term. However, you will remain on a probation status and will be limited to taking 13 units.

Dismissal Readmission

After you are dismissed, you may request readmission after one semester by doing the following:

  • Apply for the semester you want to attend
  • Meet with a counselor
  • Submit a completed Dismissal Readmission Petition
  • Submit a copy of your most recent SEP
