Learn about degree and major requirements, degree-applicable units, and how to submit a degree request form.

Steps to Earn Your Degree

Step One: General Education Breadth Patterns

Three General Education Breadth Patterns can fulfill your GE requirements at Sierra College.

California State University General Education Breadth (CSU GE)
or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)

Use either the CSU GE or the IGETC if you are

Meet with your counselor to choose your pattern and which classes to take. Note that the IGETC is the only approved GE pattern for the Computer Science for Transfer degree.

Sierra College General Education Breadth Requirements

Use the Sierra College General Education Breadth Requirements Pattern if you do not plan to transfer to a UC or CSU. Requires Learning Skill Proficiencies.

Learning Skill Proficiencies

Only required for the Sierra College General Education Breadth Requirements.

Learning Skill Proficiencies are requirements in four basic skills. May double count with major or general education requirements.

  • Writing: Satisfied by the English Composition course in area D-1
  • Reading: Met by assessment score or by one of the courses listed
  • Oral Communications: Complete one of the courses listed
  • Mathematics: Demonstrated proficiency by one of the three options listed

Step Two: Major Requirements

You will need to complete the specific requirements for your major. View the list of majors and their requirements.

Complete all courses in your major with a C or better.

Catalog Rights

Know your catalog rights. Classes you took at other colleges, and past catalog requirements may count towards your degree. View current and previous catalogs.

  • If your major is new, you can choose the catalog year when the new major was offered for the first time.
  • If you took a class in the past, and at the time the class counted towards your requirements, the class can still count even though the catalog may have changed. To find out about your individual needs, contact Academic Counseling.
  • For major or general education requirements, you can choose any catalog from the year of when you began to when you finished your continuous education. See more about continuous education below.

Continuous Education

To keep your catalog rights, you must be enrolled in at least one semester per year. You could take classes at other colleges besides Sierra College, as long as the other colleges are regionally accredited.

For a full list of regionally accredited colleges, or to find out about your individual needs, contact Academic Counseling.
